ZOA Endorses John Bolton to Continue As Us Ambassador To The UN
News
July 27, 2006

New York – The Zionist Organization of America (ZOA) has announced its strong support for Ambassador John Bolton to continue his tenure as US Ambassador to the United Nations and strongly urged US Senators to confirm him in his post at the world body. Bolton is a career public servant and former Undersecretary of State for Arms Control and International Security.

ZOA National President Morton A. Klein said, “Ambassador Bolton has lived up to the high expectations that many people, including we at the ZOA, had of him when he was first nominated by the President last year. At the time, we said that Ambassador Bolton was a man of enormous integrity who would make an outstanding advocate for the interests of the United States at the UN and his term in that post only confirms this.

“During this period, Ambassador Bolton’s efforts led to the adoption by the UN Security Council of Resolutions 1672 and 1679, which established sanctions against Sudanese individuals implicated in crimes against humanity in Darfur and also serve to strengthen peace efforts there. He led the fight to limit the UN budget to $950 million for a six-month period in order to provide impetus for increased UN reform. He also fought to establish an ethics office within the UN and promoted much-needed oversight of UN operations.

“Ambassador Bolton has also been a good friend of Israel. His efforts resulted in the UN Security Council passing last November its first ever resolution condemning acts of terrorism committed against Israelis. When the Security Council failed to approve a resolution condemning a Palestinian terrorist attack upon Israeli civilians last December, Bolton took the world body to task and issued a condemnation in the name of the United States. He vetoed a number of anti-Israel resolutions in the Security Council concerning Israel’s military actions in Gaza and Lebanon. He also publicly repudiated those who have labeled Israel’s military actions excessive and disproportionate, saying Israel’s actions were “perfectly appropriate.”

“Ambassador Bolton has not shrunk from confronting the Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, over his conduct in attending a UN ‘Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People,’ at which a ‘Map of Palestine’ was prominently displayed from which Israel had been erased. He has also courageously followed up the issue of Israel-bashing within the United Nations system, sending a sharply-worded letter to the UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, early this year threatening to cut funding to the United Nations if it continues to promote anti-Israel events. He has not accepted the notion that the US must follow politics of the lowest common denominator at the UN.

“Ambassador Bolton’s fight against international terrorism has been relentless. He has been responsible for creating a new partnership with Interpol to strengthen sanctions against Al-Qaeda. He has pressed for tougher action to suspend Iran’s uranium enrichment activities. He has also led the fight against North Korea, being instrumental in the passage of Security Council Resolution 1675 taking a stand against North Korean missile launchings. This is the strongest statement against North Korea in ten years and thanks to Ambassador Bolton’s efforts, it passed unanimously.

“Ambassador Bolton distinguished himself in previous dealings with the UN, being the driving force behind the revocation of the UN General Assembly’s 1975 ‘Zionism is racism’ Resolution in 1991. It is this achievement Bolton calls a ‘highlight of my career’ and one that removed ‘the greatest stain on the U.N.’s reputation.’

“The ZOA strongly urges the Senate to confirm the nomination of John Bolton, who has already proved an outstanding advocate of the interests of the US at the UN. He is a man of enormous courage, intelligence, knowledge, eloquence and integrity. We urge people to fax their Senators urging them to vote to confirm John Bolton as Ambassador to the United Nations.”
