Protest ‘Israel lobby’ book

Cleveland Jewish News, Letters and Opinion

October 11, 2007

On Sept. 26, the Betar Zionist Movement and the Zionist Organization of America led students and community members in a protest against Professors Stephen Walt and John Mearsheimer’s appearance at The City Club and later that evening on the campus of Case Western Reserve University.

Walt and Mearsheimer’s book The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy, praised by former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke, the Muslim Brotherhood, and the PLO office in Washington, is intellectually dishonest and anti-Semitic.

The Israel Lobby … is an assault on American Jewry. The authors’ rhetoric of hate is masked as academic work; their intelligent and smooth presentation skills pose a serious threat to all of us. Despite their claims to the contrary, their presentation convinces audiences that Israel is the root of America’s problems and that American Jews are a people engaged in conspiracy against our nation.

Our silence and apathy is what allows such Jew-hatred to thrive. We must not turn our backs to anti-Semitism. This is especially important when it is expressed in our universities, training grounds for our nation’s future leaders.

Kol HaKavod (congratulations) to the students and community members who stood strong outside The City Club and on the CWRU campus to help counter Mearsheimer and Walt’s hate-inspiring lies.
