Mayor Messam: Abandon Dangerous Resolution That Would Align Miramar With Hamas

Dear Mayor Messam,

The citizens of Miramar are horrified to learn that as the local elected official, you are wielding your public platform to demonstrate that the city of Miramar is on the side of Hamas, a U.S.-designated terrorist group, in the current war which they alone started, and have the ability to end at any moment by releasing all hostages and surrendering power.

This does not represent the will of your constituents, but rather puts them at risk. Calling for a ceasefire while Hamas is in power is a direct threat to all Americans because Hamas vows to not only repeat the October 7th massacre against Israel, but  against America as well.

Hamas’s actions were barbaric - they murdered entire families in their homes - burning them alive, throwing babies in hot ovens as the mother was forced to watch while being raped; they cut a pregnant woman’s stomach open to remove her fetus which they stabbed to death before murdering the mother. These monsters didn’t hide their actions - they live streamed it for the world to see. These blood thirsty murderers are the ones who benefit from an immediate ceasefire. They are proud of what they have done and what they currently continue to do as innocent lives are in their hands. This resolution not only rewards terror, but encourages it. Please consider abandoning your resolution, based on the following:

1.	A ceasefire would be meaningless to the terrorist group Hamas.  Hamas violated a ceasefire on October 7, 2023, when it infiltrated Israel’s border and, in an unprovoked attack, massacred 1,200 innocent men, women and children at a music festival and in their homes and communities in Israel.  Hamas has never respected or complied with any ceasefire with Israel.

2.	The proposed resolution calls for not only the release of the hostages that the terrorist group Hamas kidnapped in Israel and took to Gaza on October 7, 2023, but also the release of all “administrative detainees held by Israel.” Hamas should and must release all the hostages that it kidnapped and has kept captive since October 7 – including eight Americans – subjecting them to abuse and torture.  But Israel should not and must not be expected to release a single administrative detainee.  Administrative detainees are detained because they are suspected of terrorism or other criminal activity.  Israel must be able to keep suspected dangerous and violent terrorists and criminals off the streets.

3.	The proposed resolution wrongly calls for the resumption of funding to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), even though this organization has a long history of running schools for Palestinian Arab children in Gaza, Judea and Samaria, and the eastern part of Jerusalem, which glorify terrorism and teach children to hate Israel and Jews.  Hundreds of UNWRA staff members are terror operatives in Gaza and some even participated in the Hamas massacre on October 7.  Not a single penny of our taxpayer dollars should go to support UNWRA until UNWRA demonstrates that it has zero ties to terrorists and terrorism and that it is no longer indoctrinating Palestinian Arabs to hate Israel or Jews.

4.	If there is an immediate ceasefire, as this proposed resolution demands, then the terrorist group Hamas will remain in power in Gaza, rearm and strengthen itself, continue to exercise dictatorial control over the people of Gaza, and threaten the safety of the people of Israel and Gaza - of all backgrounds - Christians, Muslims, and Jews.  Hamas leaders have made it clear that this terrorist group’s goal is Israel’s destruction.  They have promised that they will “do it again and again” – i.e., repeatedly attack Israel and massacre innocent Israeli men, women and children – until Israel is eliminated.

Miramar cannot take any steps to promote such a horrifying and disastrous result. Please do not move forward with this resolution.
