POSITION: National Director of Development

RESPONSIBLE TO: National President / National Executive Director

The National Director of Development will work in close partnership with the National President, the National Executive Director, other ZOA staff leadership, to grow and manage all elements of ZOA’s fundraising programs, working to ensure that ZOA reaches its annual revenue goals through major gifts and foundation gifts, national and regional solicitations, direct mail, on-line giving, and planned gifts. The National Director of Development will be expected to achieve significant short and mid-term annual revenue growth and will be expected to sustain reasonable annual growth in the long term.

Primary responsibilities:

  • Stewardship of ZOA’s major gift programs including:
    • Scheduling and participating in cultivations and solicitations
    • Expanding, qualifying, and managing the list of major gift donors and prospects
    • Updating and improving solicitation materials and proposals
    • Training staff and volunteers to perform effective solicitations
  • Coordinate outreach and engagement efforts nationally and regionally, moving prospects up to the major gift level
  • Working with the Marketing Director on ZOA’s national direct mail program and on-line fundraising
  • Expansion and oversight of ZOA’s planned giving, including the administration of existing planned gifts and marketing of planned gift opportunities to donors and prospective donors
  • Analysis of the giving base and the creation of strategies for strengthening fundraising efforts
  • Shared oversight of donation processing and maintenance of the donor

Secondary responsibilities:

  • Assist with solicitating donations for the ZOA Annual Gala and other national programs
  • Promoting and Marketing of donor-related opportunities
  • Identifying and cultivating appropriate prospects for leadership involvement Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • 5-10 years fundraising experience
  • Passion for ZOA’s mission
  • Pride and professionalism in work accomplishments
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills
  • Ability to solve problems creatively and practically and to multi-task
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with staff and lay leadership
  • Entrepreneurial mindset; able to identify and pursue opportunities
  • Availability for travel around the country
