ZOA praised House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) for stating he will keep his promise to remove Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) from the House Foreign Affairs Committee. It is important to the foreign policy of the United States that the entire House support this move against this Jew-hating, Israel-bashing Congresswoman.
Mort Klein, Zionist Organization of America National President remarked, “ZOA applauds Speaker Kevin McCarthy for following through on his commitment. Jew-hatred and unwarranted Israel-bashing are dangerous not just to Israel, but to the United States. They undermine the safety of American Jews in the streets of our cities and on college campuses, and they corrode the fabric of our society. Removing Ilhan Omar, who has openly shown her bigotry against Jews, from important committees sends a powerful message that antisemitism will not be tolerated. We urge Speaker McCarthy to take the same actions against Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI). She should be removed from her committees as punishment for her bigotry as well.
“Omar claimed that Israel is an evil state that has ‘hypnotized’ the world,’ to support it. She has charged Congress with supporting Israel only because of donations from rich Jews, accused Jewish Members of Congress of dual loyalty, and openly supports BDS. She minimized the 9-11 attacks on our own country while defending al-Qaeda and Hezbollah and asked a judge sentencing an ISIS terrorist to have ‘compassion.’ She has falsely accused Israel of racist apartheid, advocated ending all aid to Israel, and compared Israel to Nazi Germany. She is opposed to sanctions against every enemy of America but has advocated sanctions on Israel. Speaker McCarthy was right to call for her removal from the Foreign Affairs Committee, and every member of Congress should support him in following through on his promise.”
Dan Pollak, ZOA Director of Government Relations, added, “We welcome Speaker McCarthy’s resolute stand against antisemitism. The words and actions of Rep. Omar are a direct threat to maintaining U.S.-Israel relations as a bulwark of our Mideast policy. Action should also be taken against Rep. Tlaib for her own acts of hatred, including overt antisemitic statements, support for BDS, support for terrorists and denying Israel’s very existence.”
