In addition to the all-star line-up of speakers and honorees at the Zionist Organization of America’s (ZOA) annual Louis D. Brandeis Dinner at the Grand Hyatt Hotel on November 23rd, the ZOA’s dinner guests enjoyed a lavish smorgasbord, followed by a full-course meal, including a sumptuous dessert buffet table. What to do with all the delicious leftovers? The ZOA donated the food to She’arit ha-Plate of Bergen County, a non-profit organization that “rescues” leftover food and serves over 40 families in Bergen County.
On the evening of the dinner, Daniel Chazin and Steve Schaffer of She-arit ha-Plate picked up 58 half-size steam table trays of delicious top-quality food which had been prepared for the ZOA dinner by Prestige Caterers. A portion of the food was donated to Tomchei Shabbos of Passaic for distribution. The rest was repacked by a team of volunteers and brought to the She’arit ha-Plate site in Teaneck. The following day, recipients arrived to pick up food for their families.
Both the ZOA and She’arit ha-Plate were delighted to participate in such a worthy effort. She-arit ha-Plate would welcome other opportunities to “rescue” leftover food.
