Hundreds of thousands of Iranians have taken to the streets of more than 100 cities across all of Iran’s 31 provinces to protest the oppressive regime and to demand basic human rights. In response, the Ayatollahs have cracked down mercilessly, killing over 500 protesters, including roughly 70 children, arrested over 20,000 people, sentenced protesters to death in sham trials and executed a number of them.
This week the House is expected to vote on Concurrent Resolution 7, a bipartisan resolution authored by Representatives Claudia Tenney (R-NY), Josh Gottheimer (D-NJ), and Michael McCaul (R-TX), that would express support for the protesters.
Zionist Organization of America National President Morton A. Klein stated, “We commend the authors and urge all Representatives to vote for House Concurrent Resolution 7, which is a good start. But Congress and the Administration must go much farther to punish the murderous theocratic regime in Tehran. Standing with the protesters only has meaning if we rein in their oppressors. The Treasury Department must fully enforce existing sanctions to cut Iran off from the international financial and oil markets and Congress should pass new and biting additional sanctions. Instead, the Biden Administration loosened sanctions and Congress turned a blind eye.
“Since he came into office, President Biden has allowed the Iranian regime to increase its oil revenues and use that money to tyrannize the Iranian people, fund terrorists, engage in proxy wars with neighboring states, partner with Russia and China, ramp up their nuclear weapons program, and target our ally Israel for destruction. Words are lovely, but real actions are necessary.”
