ZOA: Call Congress & Other Important Actions Against Hamas Arabs’ Nazi-Like Murders of Innocent Jews

Dear Friends,

News Update:  The news from Israel is heartbreaking and horrifying:  In a sophisticated attack planned with and authorized by Iran, Hamas launched thousands of rockets at Israel, disabled Israeli border surveillance by bombing observation towers with drones, and blew holes in the security fence. One thousand Hamas terrorists then invaded Israel by land, sea and air. Hamas murdered more than 800 Jews, wounded approximately 2,400 Jews, and took at least dozens of hostages, including little Jewish babies, children, women, elderly, disabled persons (including a Holocaust survivor) and soldiers.  Hamas paraded injured, naked Israeli women through the streets to cheering crowds, and threw Jewish babies and children into cages.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reports that it has taken control of all points of infiltration from Gaza into Israel, neutralized hundreds of terrorists and apprehended tens of terrorists. Active, heroic battles to rescue hostages have taken place. The IDF is now present in every town and community in southern Israel. The IDF announced yesterday that it is completing evacuating all civilians from the towns and communities in the south. The IDF is mounting a strong counterattack; it has struck 500 terror targets and infrastructure in Gaza. In northern Israel, shots were fired toward IDF posts; no soldiers were injured there. Aerial and ground forces are also on alert in northern Israel due to the Hezbollah threat; as well as in Judea/Samaria.

In Judea/Samaria, the Palestinian Authority’s governing party Fatah is celebrating and calling Hamas’ slaughter of Jews a “morning of victory, joy, and pride” and “story of heroism.” Fatah is urging all Palestinian Arabs to “escalate” and participate in terror against Israelis “in all arenas.” (PMW report) Terror-connected anti-Israel groups (SJP, Samidoun, etc.) are holding hateful antisemitic, anti-Israel rallies in New York, Canada and elsewhere.

Action Alert Update / What You Can Do to Help: Our previous action alert (“Urgent Alert From ZOA: Call Your Senator, House Rep & White House To Support Israeli Defense Against Hamas’ Massive Attack”) provided the switchboard numbers for all of Congress and the White House. Unfortunately, we were told that the switchboard will be closed until Tuesday. ZOA thus compiled for our activists contact information for every Senator, along with the Senators’ and President Biden’s relevant tweets or statements. See below. Additional info below includes statements by several House members; anti-Israel groups; etc. Please feel free to stay in touch with ZOA (liz@zoa.org or info@zoa.org) about your efforts.

Actions we suggest:

(1) Thanks and Tweets: We are gratified that Pres. Biden and almost every Senator made a strong statement unequivocally supporting Israel’s right to defend herself and condemning Hamas’ horrific atrocities. Please thank them. Note that Israel-haters are actively criticizing Senators’ pro-Israel tweets. Please tweet replies favoring the Senators’ pro-Israel statements; as well as calls and emails.

(2) Urge that Support for Israel Must Continue: It is vital to let President Biden and your Senators and Representatives know that they must continue to support Israel and Israel’s counterattacks against Hamas, no matter how long this takes. Hamas needs to be crushed, or it will slaughter innocent Jews again and again. In May 2021, Hamas launched 4,500 rockets at Israel and then Israel counterattacked. The U.S. initially supported Israel’s right to defend herself, but soon afterwards reportedly pressured Israel into a premature ceasefire. If Israel had been allowed to finish the job in 2021, yesterday’s tragedy may have been averted. Already some Squad members are pushing for an immediate ceasefire, thereby enabling Hamas to attack again. We cannot allow this.

Yesterday, Biden’s Secretary of State Blinken tweeted after he spoke with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan (a Hamas ally): “I encouraged Türkiye’s advocacy for a cease-fire and the release of all hostages held by Hamas immediately.” Demanding immediate release of the hostages is vital. However, endorsing a ceasefire right after Hamas’ mass murder of Israelis raises concerns that the administration may again pressure Israel not to crush Hamas.

(3) Urge the U.S. to Promptly Provide Israel What it Needs: Several bi-partisan Congresspersons specifically promised to make sure that Israel gets the help it needs; and Pres. Biden said that his team will engage “to make sure” that Israel has what it needs. Please urge Pres. Biden to follow through, and urge your Senators and Reps to join the following efforts to replenish Iron Dome and promptly provide whatever Israel needs:

  • Rep. Jim Jordan: “We need to immediately help replenish Israel’s stockpile of Iron Dome missiles to protect more innocent civilians from getting killed. Let’s make sure Congress can unite and assure Israel has what it needs to destroy Hamas.”
  • Sen. Chris Coons: “I will work with the administration to ensure the people of Israel have what they need to defend themselves against these atrocities.”
  • Sen. Tim Kaine: “I will continue to work with the Biden administration to ensure that Israel receives the support it needs.”
  • Sen. Lindsey Graham: “I assured [Israel’s Ambassador] that I along with many other Republicans and Democrats will make sure Israel has what it needs to destroy Hamas.”

(4) Urge Enforcing Iran Sanctions and Ending Financial Support for Palestinians and UNRWA: Iran earned $54 billion in oil sales revenue in 2022. Senior Hamas and Hezbollah officials and an advisor to Syria have revealed that Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) worked with Hamas since August to plan Hamas’ invasion of Israel, and that Iran gave the final go-ahead at an IRGC meeting with Hamas and Hezbollah. (See Iran Helped Plot Attack on Israel Over Several Weeks,” Wall St. Jnl., Oct. 8, 2023)

Many Republican Senators pointed out that Hamas is Iran-backed and/or that Hamas’ attack is connected to the U.S. failing to enforce sanctions against Iran, allowing Iran to obtain billions of dollars and/or is connected to the U.S. funding the Palestinians and Hamas-allied UNRWA. (See, e.g., Sen. Marsha Blackburn’s statement.) Unfortunately, no Democratic Senators mentioned Iran in their otherwise very supportive tweets yesterday (except for Chris Murphy, who accused Mike Pence of “partisan hackery” and “bad faith” for pointing out a connection to the U.S. agreeing to release $6 billion to Iran). Please urge Pres. Biden and a united Congress, including both our Democratic and Republican friends, to stop funding the Palestinians and UNRWA; to strictly enforce oil and other sanctions against the Islamic Republic of Iran; and to freeze the most recent $6 billion release of funds to Iran

(5) Condemn and Challenge Problematic Statements:

Although almost all statements supported Israel, there were a few problematic statements:

  • Despicably, in response to Hamas attacking Israel, the U.S. Office of Palestinian Affairs (OPA) in Jerusalem called on “all sides” [meaning Israel] to “refrain from violence and retaliatory attacks.” The post was later deleted. This is one more reason why the OPA, which is actively involved in funding Palestinians, should be closed.
  • Sen. Peter Welch said “cycles of violence” must end. This language wrongly blames “both sides” for Hamas’ unprovoked attacks. There would be no need for Israel to defend herself if Hamas did not initiate atrocities against Israeli civilians.
  • Sen. Warnock’s statement failed to identify the terrorists and the victims.
  • Outrageously, Cong. Jamaal Bowman called for ending the blockade of Gaza. The blockade by Israel and Egypt is a weapons blockade. Ending this blockade would allow Hamas to import even more weapons and perpetrate even more violence.
  • Squad members Ilhan Omar and Ayanna Pressley also used the misleading “cycles” of violence language, and called for a de-escalation and ceasefire. A ceasefire means that Hamas cannot be attacked, degraded or destroyed – even as Hamas holds dozens or more Jewish hostages, including women, children, disabled and elderly Jews – and will do this all over again if Hamas is not crushed.

(6) Join the ZOA Coalition Emergency Activism Committee: We all want to help. We are starting this group to plan actions to help Israel in these difficult days. Our first zoom meeting will be tomorrow (Tuesday, Oct. 10) at 7:30 p.m. The sign-up link is here.

  • Risch’s statement on Foreign Relations Committee website: “Risch Statement on Terrorist Attacks Against Israel” BOISE, Idaho – U.S. Senator Jim Risch (R-Idaho), ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, today released the following statement on the terrorist attacks against Israel:

“The thoughts and prayers of the American people are with our friend and partner Israel in the aftermath of an unprovoked attack at the hands of Palestinian terror groups. These attacks are a stark reminder that Israel faces enduring threats posed by Hamas, the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ), and Hezbollah, and are one reason why Israel continues to deserve the United States’ unwavering support.

“Israel has every right to respond to these attacks, and has the unequivocal support of the United States as it takes actions to prevent further violence. Any premature calls to curb Israel’s response before the threat is diminished are misguided and dangerous. We stand ready to provide support for our partner in its time of need.

“These attacks also underscore the dangers of a continued weak-kneed U.S. approach to Iran. Hamas, the PIJ, and Hezbollah rely on their Iranian patron to threaten Israel. This is the sort of outcome that is encouraged by the facilitation of the flow of cash to Iran as was recently done with $6 billion that was released by the Biden Administration. These attacks reinforce the need for a more aggressive U.S.-Iran policy that more effectively deprives the regime and its proxies of resources. Sanctions and sanctions enforcement – particularly Chinese purchases of Iranian oil – need vast improvement. The Biden Administration can and should do more.

“Finally, the Palestinian Authority’s (PA) response to these attacks has been notably muted. The PA should strongly condemn these attacks, urge calm, and demonstrate the leadership to prevent violence from spilling over into the West Bank. Otherwise, this will represent yet another missed opportunity for the PA to demonstrate leadership and discourage, rather than incentivize, violence.

“We stand shoulder to shoulder with our Israeli partners and offer condolences for the innocent lives lost.”

The United States and the civilized world must stand in solidarity as a fellow democracy defends its sovereignty and its citizens against vicious attacks. My full statement: linked
  • His full statement said: “Today’s terrorist violence against Israel is a reminder of the evil that motivates Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, and their patrons in Tehran. The United States and the civilized world must stand in solidarity as a fellow democracy defends its sovereignty and its citizens and must unequivocally condemn these vicious attacks against civilian populations. Terror on Israeli soil is only the sharpest edge of a concerted terrorist effort that threatens the United States, our partners in the Middle East, and free societies across the world. The terrorists responsible for this ongoing war against Israel were trained and equipped by Iran, the same terror state providing lethal drones to Russia to attack Ukraine. There must be consequences for those who conduct or support such terror. Failure to support friends under attack – in Kyiv or Tel Aviv – will only embolden the world’s largest state sponsor of terrorism and fellow authoritarians who watch closely for a weakening of American leadership and Western solidarity.”

  • His full statement: U.S. Senator Kevin Cramer (R-ND), member of the Senate Armed Services Committee (SASC), released the following statement after the Palestinian militant group Hamas launched a deadly land, air, and sea attack against Israel.

“Today is a sad day, and I pray for all the victims of this unprovoked and senseless terrorist attack on Israel. I stand with our ally in the face of this naked aggression by Iran and its pawn, Hamas, and condemn these terrorist acts. The United States must unequivocally support Israel’s right to defend itself from brutal terrorists and those who support their immoral actions.

While Hamas and Iran own this evil, we must also recognize President Biden’s role and foreign policy these last three years where he coddled our enemies, punished our friends, and left the world second guessing our commitment. Why would Iran show restraint when this administration has ignored Iran’s targeting of American citizens as well as its nuclear growth and continued sponsorship of terror? This administration also accepted attacks in Syria, Iraq, UAE, and Saudi Arabia, ignored Iranian attacks on ships in the Arabian Gulf, ignored their supplying of weapons to Russia used to kill civilians in Ukraine, and rewarded Iran’s kidnapping of American citizens with a $6 billion ransom. Why would Hamas show restraint when the Biden administration has worked with the Taliban, drawn equivalency between the Iranian backed Houthi rebels and our ally Saudi Arabia, and stood by as terrorist actions occur daily against Israel?

“America’s strength and its role in the world matters, no matter what some on either side of the aisle may think. Terror, hate, and aggression do not stop unless confronted. Iran will not stop with the fall of Israel any more than Russia would with the fall of Ukraine. As the strongest nation in the world, we must wisely choose where our leadership is needed, whether through clear foreign policy or direct support.

“When the U.S. leaves a vacuum, the rest of the world fills the void. This is a moment when we need to be strong and clear in support of our friend and ally Israel, while diametrically opposing the terrorism of Iran and Hamas.”

  • And: “I appreciate President Biden’s strong statement in support of Israel from this barbaric attack by Hamas. There will be pressure to limit Israeli operations, as in the past, but I expect Congress and the Biden Administration to stay strong and not give in to such pressure. Simply put, American policy should be Israel has the right to do whatever it takes, for as long as it takes, to destroy the terrorist threat coming from Hamas.”

  • He also tweeted on his campaign X site: “Hamas’ terrorist attack on Israel today is an assault on Western Civilization. The truth is though, Joe Biden funded these attacks on Israel. America’s weakness is blood in the water for bad actors, but this is worse than that. We didn’t just invite this aggression, we paid for it. Iran is the biggest funder of Hamas. This is the Biden $6 billion ransom payment at work. Israel must defend its people and the nation, and the United States must do everything we can to assist our ally Israel. As Psalm 122:6 encourages us, we must pray for the peace of Jerusalem.

President Biden’s 11:08 a.m. tweet: “@POTU.S. Today, I spoke with @IsraeliPM about the appalling Hamas terrorist attacks in Israel. I offered our support and reiterated my unwavering commitment to Israel’s security. @FLOTU.S. and I express our heartfelt condolences to the families who have lost loved ones.”

Other Biden tweets and video remarks posted on Twitter today:

Biden 8:00 p.m. tweet: “We will never fail to have Israel’s back.” With video statement: “In this moment of tragedy, I want to say to them and the world and to terrorists everywhere that the United States stands with Israel. We will not ever fail to have their back. We’ll make sure they’ll have the help their citizens need. And they can continue to defend themselves.”

Biden 7:35 p.m. tweet: “Let me say this as clearly as I can. This is not a moment for any party hostile to Israel to exploit these attacks to seek advantage. My Administration’s support for Israel’s security is rock solid and unwavering.”

Biden 5:30 p.m. tweet: “The United States stands with the people of Israel.”

Biden 5:00 p.m. tweet: “The world is seeing appalling images. Thousands of rockets raining down on Israeli cities. Hamas terrorists killing not only Israeli soldiers, but civilians on the streets and in their homes. It’s unconscionable. Israel has a right to defend itself – full stop.”

Biden 2:48 p.m. tweet: “Tune in as I deliver remarks on the terrorist attacks in Israel.”

Biden’s Video Remarks: “Today, the people of Israel are under attack, orchestrated by a terrorist organization, Hamas. At his moment of tragedy, I want to say to them and the world and to terrorists everywhere that the United States stands with Israel. We will not ever fail to have their back. We’ll make sure they’ll have the help their citizens need. And they can continue to defend themselves. Now, the world’s seen appalling images. Thousands of rockets in the space of hours raining down on Israeli cities. I got up this morning and started at 7:30, 8:00 with my calls. Hamas terrorists crossing into Israel, killing not only Israeli soldiers, but Israeli civilians, on the street, in their homes. Innocent people murdered, wounded. Entire families taken hostage by Hamas. Just days after Israel marked the holiest days on the Jewish calendar. It’s unconscionable. When I spoke with PM Netanyahu this morning, I told him the United States stands with the people of Israel in the face of these terrorist assaults. Israel has a right to defend itself and its people. Full stop. There is never a justification for a terrorist attack. And my administration’s support for Israel’s security is rock solid and unwavering. Let me say this as clearly as I can: This is not a moment for any party hostile to Israel to exploit these attacks to seek advantage. The world is watching. I’ve also been in contact with the King of Jordan. I spoke with Congress, the director of my national security team to engage with their Israeli counterparts: military to military; intelligence to intelligence; diplomat to diplomat, to make sure that Israel has what it needs. I’ve also directed my team to remain in constant contact with __ throughout the region. Including Egypt, Turkey, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Oman, UAE, as well as all of our European partners and the Palestinian Authority. It’s also a terrible tragedy on a human level. It’s hurting innocent people. Seeing the lives that have been broken by this; families torn apart; it’s heartbreaking. Jill and I are praying for those families that have been impacted by this violence. We grieve with those who have lost their loved ones, lost a piece of their soul. We hope for a swift recovery for many of them. We are and I am personally going to remain in close contact with PM Netanyahu, as this situation continues to develop. Let there be no mistake: The United States stands with the state of Israel. The United States became the first nation that recognized Israel eleven minutes after its founding 75 years ago. Thank you very much.” (Biden walked off without answering questions.)

Notable House members’ tweets:

Congressman Jim Jordan (R-OH) tweeted: Rockets are raining down on Israeli towns right now. We need to immediately help replenish Israel’s stockpile of Iron Dome missiles to protect more innocent civilians from getting killed. Let’s make sure Congress can unite and assure Israel has what it needs to destroy Hamas.”

Yesterday, Jim Jordan tweeted: “The unprovoked terror attack today and the murders of innocent Israeli citizens are a stark reminder of the brutality of Hamas and Iran-backed extremists. The indiscriminate killings of men, women, and children are sickening. We must pray for Israel, its leadership, the men and women serving in its defense, and all Israelis today. It is heartening that Congress has come together in a bipartisan manner to strongly condemn the horrendous attacks on Israel and the Israeli citizens. We must continue to support our great ally as it expels this invasion, overwhelms these extremists, and works to prevent Hamas from ever harming Israeli citizens again.”

Jim Jordan also tweeted: “America stands with Israel today and every day. It must defend itself against these Hamas terrorists. We will continue to pray for our great ally and its citizens.”

Jim Jordan also reposted the following tweet by former Congressman Lee Zeldin: “The “Democratic Socialists of America” are protesting in NYC tomorrow in favor of Hamas’ rape, terrorism, and murder of innocent Israeli citizens. This is as sick as it gets. Many Democrat elected officials in NY actively seek the endorsement of this terrorist loving group.”

(The post also shows the DSA tweet, which says: “NYC-DSA @nycDSA. Tomorrow, October 8, at 1PM. Times Square. In solidarity with the Palestinian people and their right to resist 75 years of occupation and apartheid. FREE PALESTINE! twitter.com/PeoplesForumNY…”)

Sickeningly, Congressman & Squad member Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) tweeted a call for ending the weapons blockade of Gaza, saying: “. . . We need a way to end this deadly violence that is killing and traumatizing generations of Israelis and Palestinians alike – including the blockade of Gaza. I have been to the Gaza border and know that Israelis and Palestinians are constantly living in fear. . . .” [Ending the weapons blockade would allow Hamas to import even more weapons and perpetrate more violence.]

No tweets from Squad members Rashida Tlaib and Cory Bush; or from Andre Carson.

Squad member Ilhan Omar used the distorted “cycle” term and called for a ceasefire. She tweeted: “”I condemn the horrific acts we are seeing unfold today in Israel against children, women, the elderly, and the unarmed people who are being slaughtered and taken hostage by Hamas. Such senseless violence will only repeat the back and forth cycle we’ve seen, which we cannot allow to continue. We need to call for deescalation and ceasefire. I will keep advocating for peace and justice throughout the Middle East.” [A ceasefire means that Hamas cannot be attacked, degraded or destroyed – even as Hamas holds dozens or more Jewish hostages, including women, children, disabled and elderly Jews – and will do this all over again if it is not destroyed.]

Squad member Ayanna Pressley also called for a ceasefire, tweeting: “These devastating attacks on Israelis are deeply alarming and my heart breaks for the victims & their loved ones. We need an immediate ceasefire & de-escalation. It is long past time to stop this cycle of violence & trauma, and work toward a just & lasting peace in the region.”

Squad member Betty McCollum (D-MN) (who repeatedly introduces heinous antisemitic bills falsely accusing Israel of harming Palestinian children – see, e.g., here, here and here) released a statement saying that “The U.S. government and the international community must immediately unite in denouncing the escalating violence in Israel and Gaza, and demand the immediate release of all hostages. These appear to be serious acts of war, and war is never the answer. . . While we await more information, my heart goes out to all those families impacted by this violence.” McCollum referred to Hamas as “Gaza militants.” She appears to be indirectly angling for an early ceasefire.

Anti-Israel organizations blamed Israel and celebrated the Hamas atrocities committed against Jews:

IfNotNow (INN) accused Israel of every lie in the book, including genocide and “murdering Palestinians in the streets” [in other words, exactly what the Palestinian Arab terrorists due to Jews] and claimed that Israel provoked the “Palestinian militants’ actions” [INN’s term for Hamas murdering and raping innocent Jews and Jewish children]

Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) claimed that the source of “all this violence” [JVP’s term for Hamas’ atrocities against innocent Jews] is Israel’s “war on Palestinians” for 75 years [namely, Israel’s existence]. (INN and JVP’s statements are listed in Newsweek.)

Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) chapters across the U.S., including at American University, Rutgers, UC San Diego, the University of Minnesota and San Jose State University, all celebrated “the resistance.” (See Times of Israel article)

Violent anti-Israel groups Within Our Lifetime (which calls for “Globalizing the Intifada” terror wars against Jews), Samidoun (which is allied with terror group PFLP), Decolonize This Place, Al-Awda (which also has ties to terror groups PFLP, Hamas, PIJ, etc.) and others announced rallies on Sunday in Times Square and on Monday at the Israeli consulate in New York “to defend the heroic Palestinian resistance.” (TOI article)

We also received an alert from Canada that “PALESTINIAN RALLYS celebrating and glorifying the barbaric mass murder of over 700 Israelis and the numbers are climbing and the kidnapping of Israeli babies, young children their mothers and the elderly, are going on at Nathan Philips Square, as well all over Toronto and throughout Canada. Our Jewish leaders have appealed to the Police and the Liberal government to stop these Palestinian rallys glorifying the mass murder and kidnapping of innocent Israeli civilians, but as usual it has fallen on deaf ears.” There will be A SOLIDARITY RALLY FOR ISRAEL on Monday at 7pm at Mel LASTMAN SQUARE in Toronto, Canada.”

There will be a pro-Israel rally in Florida today, October 9, at 6:00 PM.
